When Pittsburgh financial planner Ronna Del Valle, CFP®, meets with a new client, she often begins by drawing the client's family tree. It helps Del Valle provide clients with "Generational Continuity," a unique financial planning approach that focuses not only on the client's needs, but on how clients can provide for their children as well as their aging parents.

"We're dealing with clients' emotions about their families, but we also have to focus on how to allocate finite resources to competing generational needs - retirement, college, long-term care," said Del Valle, president of Golden Strategies Financial Group of Upper St. Clair, Pa. and a member of the Financial Planning Association® (FPA®).

To recognize her innovative approach to financial planning, Del Valle is featured in MONEY magazine's June issue and on CNN as part of a series called "A Fresh Approach.™" ING U.S. Financial Services, FPA® and MONEY magazine started the program to recognize the most innovative of the country's more than 28,000 financial planners.

Del Valle practices Generational Continuity herself. Her son, Noah Farberow, is the senior vice president of her business. Together, they work with a multidisciplinary team of attorneys, accountants, insurance professionals and others to provide generations of clients comprehensive, one- stop service. The approach helps clients like Alicia Tomasits of Belle Vernon, Pa., feel more at ease and secure, particularly when the unexpected occurs.

Last year, Tomasits' 39-year-old husband died suddenly, leaving her as the sole caretaker of two young children. Working closely with Tomasits, Del Valle, an attorney and accountant settled the estate, resolved issues related to Mr. Tomasits' employer, planned to pay for the children's education, addressed Tomasits' income and retirement needs, and prepared will and trust documents.

"Our objective was always Generational Continuity," Del Valle said. "As is the case with most of my clients, our on-going relationship, and my understanding of not only her financial situation, but also her goals and objectives made planning during this difficult emotional time much more efficient and easier."
